Malerier is øyvindland’s debut album.
Release: march 6 2020

Øyvind Mathisen releases his debut album "Malerier" (Norwegian for paintings) on March 6, 2020 on Øra Fonogram with the septet ØyvindLAND - a band that represents the latest generation of interesting and engaging young Norwegian jazz musicians, for whom we can expect many great music experiences in the future. The album is packed with strong compositions and an interaction that oozes young playfulness and an unstoppable power.

“Malerier" consists of seven major original compositions and two shorter improvised sequences, making the album a holistic piece of art. The compositions are built around melodic themes, which have been spiced up with creative ensemble arrangements such as acrobatic lines, block harmonizations and rhythmic structures. This is topped off with excellent solo performances which make this album an exciting and fresh experience for the listener.

Øyvind Mathisen, only 26 years old, is a Norwegian trumpet player and composer from Oslo, recently graduated from the prestigious jazz-academy in Trondheim. The ensemble ØyvindLAND started up in 2017 and has developed its sound throughout their student years in Trondheim, along with Mathisen parallelly developing his compositional language. For three years now ØyvindLAND has been playing concerts all over Norway. After this period of playing live gigs the next natural step is unfolding now, as the band is releasing their album.

The compositions on this record are my “musical paintings”, portraying the sounds of great jazz legends that have fascinated and inspired me as I was composing. Working on this music, I have been on an interesting journey starting with American legends, going via Cuba, all the way to Norway and back again. They, on the other hand, contain few direct quotes from these legends, but I rather see my compositions as expressionistic paintings and interpretations of their sounds. Naturally the music also bears the fingerprints of each and every musician in the ensemble, contributing to the unique sound of ØyvindLAND.” - Øyvind Mathisen

This record is a breath of fresh air, and Mathisen and the rest of the band pay tribute to the old heroes while painting with completely new colors.

ØyvindLAND has definitely carved out its own way and created its own paintings

ØyvindLAND has made an exciting debut album, which is varied in expression and fascinating, not least because they get some of the best from the best and make it their own. Recommended!
