An Atlas Of Geographical Wonders/Part IV: Volcanos is part of a workseries based on on natural phenomenon. The other three parts of this series investigates rivers, mountains and tall buildings. Part IV: Volcanos is based on measures of volcanic activity found around the three volcanoes Katla on Iceland, Fuji in Japan and Etna on Sicily. The three volcanoes displays different modes of activity creating a distinct character for each volcano. I have been particularly interested in the high frequency activity found around these volcanoes. This activity sometimes reaches frequencies a double bass almost can play in it’s very lowest register. The double bass is re-tuned for each movement creating a different soundscape and character for the three volcanoes.
reconstruction v/shadows of machines is part of a workseries based on sounds from the textile industry. It consists of a soundtrack and a score for the live performer. The work has a schematic and mechanical form with a strict set of rules for how the elements should be put together. I have developed an idea of instrumental shadows for the various machines and have in this way been able to work with a continuum from pure machine sound to pure instrumental sound via machine sound in combination with instrumental shadows. The soundtrack consists of recordings of machines and recordings of the instrumental shadows Michael and I developed for each machine. In addition I have transcribed the various machines for the live double bass. This form the basis for a three-part form where the instrumental shadows get a bigger and bigger place in the soundscape together with the acoustic sound. In live performance and installation the work is accompanied by a video by Jeremy Welsh.
